Demanding reductions - how massive reductions can be a burden on speech perception

چکیده

One of the most important features of conversational speech is its variability. Two different speakers utter the same word very differently. Even the same word uttered by the same speaker twice, will not be identical. We also know that even small changes in the speech signal can hamper speech perception processes drastically. A simple change of segments can lead to problems for listeners identifying the correct lexical entries. On a theoretical level, variation, especially due to reduction processes, arguably should pose obstacles for speech perception. For instance, the number of segments or syllables can different from the one (canonical) representation due to reduction in conversational speech. Thus, speech perception is not trivial, but works quite well in everyday situations, even when listeners and speakers interact in very noisy surroundings.

How are words reduced in spontaneous speech?

Words are reduced in spontaneous speech. If reductions are constrained by functional (i.e., perception and production) constraints, they should not be arbitrary. This hypothesis was tested by examing the pronunciations of highto mid-frequency words in a Dutch and a German spontaneous speech corpus. In logistic-regression models the "reduction likelihood" of a phoneme was predicted by fixed-effe...

Recognizing reduced forms: Different processing mechanisms for similar reductions

Recognizing phonetically reduced forms is a huge challenge for spoken-word recognition. Phonetic reductions not only occur often, but also come in a variety of forms. The paper investigates how two similar forms of reductions – /t/-reduction and nasal place assimilation in Dutch – can eventually be recognized, focusing on the role of following phonological context. Previous research indicated t...

Normal adult aging and the contextual influences affecting speech and meaningful sound perception.

It is widely accepted that hearing loss increases markedly with age, beginning in the fourth decade ISO 7029 (2000). Age-related hearing loss is typified by high-frequency threshold elevation and associated reductions in speech perception because speech sounds, especially consonants, become inaudible. Nevertheless, older adults often report additional and progressive difficulties in the percept...

The impact of bilateral gain reduction on localization and speech perception in spatially-separated noise

Bilaterally independent (mismatched) hearing aids cannot replicate the natural timing and level cues between ears, and hence, may result in negative consequences for localization and speech perception in spatially-separated noise performance. Five gain reduction patterns were used to evaluate the impact of bilaterally mismatched gain reduction schemes on localization and speech perception perfo...
